Oft times we forget that we are children of God. The usual mindset is that we are Christians and walk in our faith. This is true, but we have a more real and personal relationship with God that we can aspire to—His children.
The story of the Prodigal Son is not only a parable of Christian restoration, but alludes directly to our relationship with God. We are to act like Christ, speak like Christ and even DO as Christ, because He being the "only begotten" son is in fact our elder brother. That is why Romans 8 goes to such lengths to give us the comparison of our son/daughtership to God by direct correlation to Christ.
"...to be glorified together."
Discipleship is a discipline (hence the root word) but also denotes a type of relationship to a Master. Our Master is Jesus Christ (Luke 9:23) and the goal is to be just as He is. This is not concerned with you "walking on water" which is only a SELF-righteous endeavor (meaning the cliche NOT the actual walking! smile!) and amounts to nothing. But it does speak to behavior and the relationship Christ had with God the Father. Christ always said that it was by the power and presence of God that He spoke or did anything.
Then He said we are to seek that with Him.
That is why it is called an adoption, that through Christ in us (Gospel of John and elsewhere) we gain access and relationship to the Father. As Christ said, He in God, God in Him and we in Christ. That is also why the only path to God the Father, is through Christ the Son, in other words the adoption.
Food for thought and would love feedback.
Be blessed, be loved and be at peace,
~Jonathan
